WHAT IS BALNEOPHOTOTHERAPY?

Balneophototherapie
balneophototherapy

Balneology (from the Latin balneum, meaning "bath," and the Greek balaneion, meaning "bathhouse") is the study of the therapeutic applications and healing effects of water, mud, moor, oils, and other natural substances. Balneotherapy utilizes these elements through methods such as bathing, drinking cures, and inhalation treatments.

Why Balneophototherapy?

Balneophototherapy is frequently used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and neurodermatitis. Also known as bath light therapy, this method combines bathing in a solution with a high concentration of salt and UV light therapy for enhanced therapeutic effects.

Unlike traditional hydrotherapy, balneophototherapy does not utilize plain water. Instead, it involves water enriched with various substances dissolved at higher concentrations to maximize its benefits.

Types of Therapeutic Baths

  • Salt Baths
  • Carbonic Baths (infused with carbon dioxide)
  • Sulfur Baths
  • Brine Baths (highly concentrated saltwater baths)
  • Moor and Mud Baths
  • Medicinal Oil Baths
  • Alternating Baths (alternating between cold and warm water)
  • Exercise Baths (water-based physical therapy)

Asynchronous Balneophototherapy

Asynchronous balneophototherapy refers to a treatment method where the light therapy is administered after the bath. The steps are performed in close succession, and two main forms of this therapy can be distinguished:

1. Asynchronous Bath PUVA Therapy
In this form, the bath contains a psoralen additive. Psoralen, a compound found in the essential oils of various plants, increases the skin's sensitivity to light. Following the bath, the skin is exposed to UV-A rays (PUVA = Psoralen plus UV-A).

2. Asynchronous Photosole Therapy
This variation involves bathing in a solution containing 10 to 25 percent brine, depending on the condition being treated. Unlike the PUVA method, UV-B light therapy is applied after the brine bath.

Synchronous Balneophototherapy

In synchronous balneophototherapy, the bath and UV radiation are administered simultaneously. This method is often referred to as TOMESA therapy, as it primarily involves adding Dead Sea salt to the bathwater. Unlike a standard saline solution, Dead Sea salt contains significantly higher concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions, which can have a therapeutic effect on the skin.

The Benefits of Balneophototherapy

Balneophototherapy works by helping to remove inflammatory substances from the skin, making it particularly beneficial for conditions like psoriasis and neurodermatitis.

Many patients report significant improvements in their skin after undergoing this treatment. While it is especially effective for psoriasis, TOMESA therapy has proven to be highly suitable for individuals with neurodermatitis. The healing properties of salt, revered since ancient times, continue to play a vital role in modern therapies.
