NEURODERMATITIS – HOW TO RELIEVE ITCHING

Neurodermatitis and Itching – What to Do When Your Skin Itches?
In neurodermatitis, the skin's natural protective function is disrupted, leading to increased transepidermal water loss. This means the skin loses more moisture than usual, resulting in severe dryness. Dry skin triggers itching, creating a vicious itch-scratch cycle. Due to the compromised barrier function of the skin, irritants and allergens can easily penetrate, causing redness and further itching. Scratching only worsens the situation by damaging the skin barrier, allowing irritants to enter more easily and intensifying the symptoms.

Since scratching exacerbates itching, here are some (non-medical) tips to help minimize it without further damaging your skin:

What Can You Do About Itching? How To Control Your Itchy Skin!

Tip 1 - Pinch instead of scratching

We know it's tempting, but using your nails on your skin isn't the best choice. However, if you simply can't resist, try alternative methods to soothe the irritation. Gently brushing, blowing on the area, patting, or lightly pinching the itchy spot can help relieve discomfort without causing further damage to the skin.

Tip 2 - Apply Cream

A soothing remedy for itching is applying cream to the affected area. However, avoid using cortisone immediately. Instead, choose a gentle, additive-free cream, preferably one without fragrances. This will help keep the itchy skin moisturized and can actively reduce the urge to scratch. For more effective relief, there are prescription creams available to treat eczema, alleviate itching, and support the skin's barrier functions.

Tip 3 - Distraction

Distraction also helps against itching. Speaking of distracting - try to forget the itch caused by distraction. Make up your mind. Listen to music, read a book, allow yourself to consciously relax.

Tip 4 - Relaxation

While dealing with itching or the onset of a new flare-up, try to remain calm. It’s important not to blame yourself if you’ve scratched or feel a flare-up coming on. Stressing about it can actually make the itching worse. Psychological stress is known to exacerbate symptoms, creating a vicious cycle. Focus on breaking that cycle by staying as relaxed as possible.

Tip 5 - Cool Down

Cooling the affected areas can help alleviate itching, as it temporarily numbs the nerve endings without harming the skin. Heat and sweat tend to worsen the itching, so it’s best to stay and sleep in a cool environment. You can use washcloths soaked in cold water, compresses, or even cooling gels stored in the refrigerator to soothe your skin.

Tip 6 - Take a Shower - With Salt

When the itching becomes unbearable, a shower can help provide relief. It's better than soaking in a tub, as long baths can further dry out the skin. A warm shower helps you relax and momentarily forget about the itch, which can have a calming effect on both your mind and your skin.

Important! Avoid water that's too hot, as it stimulates blood circulation and can make itching worse.
